Core Values: Passion, Creativity, Growth, Curiosity, and Timeliness

Bio

Drew Baysa recently graduated from the University of the Philippines with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, with a major in Microbiology. Growing up, she always had a fascination with science and its endless possibilities. However, Drew also had a deep appreciation for the arts and found that combining the two made for a unique and fulfilling experience.

Ā

During her time in college, Drew became increasingly interested in helping her community, specifically farmers. She worked on a research project focused on improving crop yields for local farmers, and is actively engaging with them. She loves working with kids, and as a biology major, she joined a Genetics organization that does medical missions for kids with special needs and is actively contributing to raising awareness about rare diseases, folic acid, and equitable opportunities and access to health care.

Ā

After graduation, Drew knew that she wanted to continue using her skills and passions to make a positive impact in her community. She is currently exploring opportunities to work with non-profit organizations that support farmers and children with special needs. Drew is excited to see where her passion for science and creativity will take her next and is eager to continue making a difference in the world.

IMPACT PROJECTS  | HIGHLIGHTS

Research for Farmers

I headed a research project for the farmers in my community. The research is about revising Indonesia and Japan’s techniques to target a bacteria called Ralstonia solanacearum. It negatively affects banana crops and is endemic to our country. For years, they have been using the traditional method with the use of chemicals which is very harmful to plants and human health. I am closely working with my professor who is the head of Plant Pathology in the Microbiology Division and is communicating with the farmers to get to know them better and to address other problems that they have.

Ambassador/Journalist for a Genetics Organization

I am an ambassador of The UPLB Genetics Society; an organization that promotes the science of genetics in my country. We raise awareness about folic acid, rare diseases, and genetic diseases through medical missions, outreach programs, and social media campaigns. Apart from that I was a contributor to the organization’s newspaper, Genews.

Charter and co-founder of a Financial Literacy organization

During the pandemic, everyone was stuck at home. It caused blockchain to move forward and gave a lot of free time to teens having no classes. It started with a small group of teens interested to achieve financial freedom at a very young age and now we have an organization that teaches teens everything they need to learn about finance. I co-founded this organization with the main goal of promoting and raising awareness about financial literacy and with our knowledge, raise funds to do community outreach.

Mentorship Experience

1. I spearheaded my research project along side my professor. It helped me learn about outreach especially in asking forĀ resourcesĀ and connecting with the people I really wanted to impact (farmers).Ā

2. As a co-founder of an organization, I was part of forming and building the org’s foundation from the constitution to the promotion of the organization with my peers.

3. Gabay Service

I spearheaded events for freshmen students and even lead trainings for them weekly for their first semester.

What others experienced

" I loved the entire experience. I was stuck with my project for a LONG time and I'm glad my mentor helped me. Not only did she help me with my project but she helped me connect with other researchers and experts."
